Revisiting Manifesta 11
Four years ago I was installing Manifesta 11 in Zurich. I co curated the Historical Exhibition of the biennial alongside Christian Jankowski, bringing together 100 of the 130 artists in the biennial. This included 250 artworks that were exhibited across four venues - the Kunsthalle Zurich, Migros Museum, Luma Foundation and Helmhaus.
I decided to bring together as much evidence of the exhibition as I could here. Sadly a computer blip (when an email account was shut down) ate up all my correspondance on it but I went through the Manifesta11 website (which is still live) and searched online to bring show some of the work here.
I’m still impressed by the artist list I brought together for the event (scroll down under the new commissions to see the full list of all artists in the biennial). My section included Thornton Dial, James Son Ford Thomas, Martine Syms, Taocheng Wang, Adrien Piper, Susan Hiller, Artist Placement Group, Simon Denny, Trisha Baga, Anne Collier, Yto Barrada, Rachel Harrison, Frances Stark, Chris Burden, Katherine Bernhardt, Stephen Claydon, Mark Leckey, Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky, Marcel Van Edeen, Mike Smith, Jeremy Shaw, Coco Fusco, Paulina Olowska, Kim Gordon, Graham Little, Pierre Huyghe, Amalia Pica, Ahmet Ogut, Bhakti Baxter, Duane Hanson, Giovanna Olmos, Fatima Al Qadiri and Khalil Al Gharaballi.
Here are some images of some of the works on show. Wish there was proper video documentation of the whole thing. I spoke about the experience of co-curating at the time (and still think Georgina Casparis and Masha Isserlis also deserved co-curator credits for their work) but looking back I’m still proud of the work I did. I’m still happy I had the chance to do this. Wish I was seeing the latest iteration in Marseille now.
